“In the creation of comedy, it is paradoxical that tragedy stimulates the spirit of ridicule; because ridicule, I suppose is an attitude of defiance: we must laugh in the face of our helplessness against the forces of nature – or go insane” Charlie Chaplin
On March 26th, 2020 at midnight a Nationwide lock-down was enforced by the South African Government on its people. As a teacher and mentor to many young photographers throughout the years I have always recommended choosing projects close to home with personal meaning. With the lock-down, these words echoed back at me and I asked my husband Francois if he would want to work together on a portrait series where he would dress up and I would create a daily portrait of him. My idea came about as Francois has had a theatrical background and loves to dress up. So being in lockdown together it seemed a compatible project. It became a game in which Francois would look at all the clothes, hats, scarves, and objects in the house and on a daily basis find outfits to surprise and amuse me and eventually the game became so immersive that Francois started to dream about the outfits he would put together the next day.
I posted a photograph a day on instagram. There are 30 portraits in the series.
