BIOGRAPHY
Jodi Bieber’s passion and concerns lie with her birth country, South Africa. Her practice engages with the political, societal, and economic circumstances of our times. Her life experiences have influenced and inspired her photographic choices. Central themes explored deal with contemporary issues related to Gender, Politics, and Identity, often contradicting the mainstream media narrative.
Her photographic projects are exhibited both locally and internationally in museums, galleries, festivals, and institutions. She has won numerous international awards, including the Premier Award at World Press Photo in 2010 for her photograph of Bibi Aisha. The photograph appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine, and CNN and The New York Times included it among the top 100 influential images of the previous decade.
Her five monographs include “Between Dogs and Wolves – Growing up with South Africa, 1996; Soweto, 2010; Real Beauty, 2014; Between Darkness and Light, Selected Works: South Africa 1994-2010; and Francois, Lockdown in times of the Corona Virus, 2020.
Her photographs are housed in significant collections such as The Artur Walther Collection, The François Pinault Collection, The Oppenheimer Collection, The Johannesburg Art Gallery, Iziko Museums Collection, and the Jean Paul Blachere Foundation.
Bieber is dedicated to mentoring and teaching the next generation of photographers; she lectures and conducts photographic workshops worldwide. The Royal Photographic Society named her one of The Hundred Heroines at the end of 2018.
She is represented by The Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York.
